I've actually had this post on my mind for a couple weeks now, and considering my circumstances, I think I'll take a crack at a reply.

For me, being gay is a huge part of my identity. To use an example, I'm a gay atheist American, not an atheistic American gay or any other ordering of the three. Gay comes first. Can I tell you why? Well, not with any certainty, but I have ideas. "Outsider status" is an interesting idea, but here's my take:

I've dealt with my homosexuality since I was about 12 or 13 years old. It's been front and center in my mind since then, and I've had to come to terms with it. I'm sure things would have been different if I came from a more progressive background, but because of my conservative upbringing, the realization that I might be gay was like a punch in the gut (if by "the gut" I mean "the crotch of my very soul"). I grew up in a home where every LGBT person and anyone who didn't conform to 1950s-esque gender roles was called "confused" or "screwed up." Because of that, I lived for the better part of 10 years in self-hatred and denial, trying to "fix" myself. During that time, I had to face the reality of my being gay every single day. Everything in life reminded me of it. It was all I could think about, because I was led to believe I had to maintain a constant battle against it.

But as you know, I eventually came to embrace the fact that I'm gay. It's like, I spent so much time searching for a weakness in my homosexuality, so much time scrutinizing it, fighting it, and thinking about it, like you and I both have done with our religious views, that it became the major facet of my life. I defined my old life by my progress in overcoming being gay, but now in my new life, it's just sort of flipped to being measured by how much I've accepted it, embraced it, and integrated it into my life.

I hope that at least some of this makes sense to you. It is 4:30 in the morning, after all.

So... I suppose to answer your questions, I do like your comparison of embracing homosexuality and your religious journey. The parallels are definitely there. Of course it's not a 1:1 equivalent, but it is quite similar. Lucky me, having gone through both of those processes, eh? :D

As for outsider status, I'm sure it plays a large part in the structure of the LGBT community as a whole, and to an extent in the identity of LGBT people as well. Have you seen the "metrosexual" episode of South Park? It's all about this concept. Well, this concept and Crab People.

Anyway, I personally don't wake up and think, "Gee, I love being an outsider," but like I think I mentioned when Rob and I were visiting Bellingham, being gay does make me feel a bit special. There's a certain mystique about it, like I'm going to Hogwarts or something. The idea that something about me that I can't control, that an inherent aspect of who I am sets me apart from the majority... it's a bit scary, but also really exciting.

Anyway, this is what I've come up with on the spot here. I'd love to chat more at length about this with you sometime, if you're willing. Drop me a line any time!

無神、無主 (no gods, no masters),

- Reynvaan

Re: Memes and Temes

The wikipedia says that memetics and semiotics have a feud a'brewin. Which is awesome, since they both have really interesting ideas, but tend to lean toward the self-indulgent.

I read Blackmore as suggesting that memes had a sort of emergent structure, and might give folks another way to think about the development of cultures and organizations - that sounds totally rad, but I'm not sure that I'm sold on it's scientific rigor. It reads sort of as a thought experiment at some points, not that it would be any less worthwhile for me if it were.

What do you think about this business?

Re: Halo 3 Lava Zombie

I have never played anything past the first Halo (and even that was only for a few minutes), but I would like to play all of them someday. Everyone and their brother loves the action that's innate with zombies. Even Dead Rising which honestly wasn't very good, sold pretty well.

Re: Fantasy Zombie Game, Part 1

There was an idea similar to this in a UMS game-type on Starcraft. Panzer_Cavalier made it. You were in a town, zombies would assault the many checkpoints dotting the city, and you would try and hold them off while moving around, finding civilians to train for combat, spending resources on weapon upgrades, etc. I must have played that game like... 100's of times.

It's a fantastic idea. ;)

Re: Fantasy Zombie Game, Part 1

I have just rolled out a flash game that may interest you. And at nights the zombies would come and in the day they would be in buildings then you would go searching with your own men, get ammo, guns, supplies in the 12 hours of the day. starting at 8am.
You select how many hours you want to spend searching for weapons, other survivors, and fix your barricade. all in first,or third person view. Thats the kind of game i am looking for.

Re: Fantasy Zombie Game, Part 1

Good idea.
it would be one really kick ass game.
if someone made a "good" zombie survival game
i would be very impressed

Re: Fantasy Zombie Game, Part 1

THIS IS WHAT I HAVE BEEN THINKING ABOUT FOR MONTHS. I have a sketchbook and a notebook filled with ideas, story lines, and other z-day survival strategies. This sounds amazing to no end and if it is ever done could surpass every game ever made. A zombie invasion RTS is exactly what the gaming industry needs. NOT another C&C or another Solid Metal Slug XXXVII... no, it needs a game exactly like what you are talking about, i love it!

PS i just got the Zombie Survival Guide by Max Brooks and it ahs a lot of ideas that can further your conceptualization of this game

Re: Fantasy Zombie Game, Part 1

like i said before GTa version of resident evil but without having to do all those annoying missions

Re: Fantasy Zombie Game, Part 1

that has got to be the best game idea i've heard for a long time. ever since i was little and saw the film resident evil (im 15 by the way) i've always been thinking of ways that i would defend myself if Zombies ever "happened" and i've always liked the idea of games that are zombie survival kind of games but not like dead rising, it would have to be a good game. i've always thought theat a GTA version of resident evil would be amazing with the whole city to roam around in and kill zombies and survive n' stuff if capcom or any other games producer made this type of game they would make a killin

Re: Fantasy Zombie Game, Part 1

This side is really amazing and fun to play. The games in this side are challenging.

Re: Fantasy Zombie Game, Part 1

OK boys and girls! I LOVE what I've read here. The 1st person to 3rd person and back veiws, collect supplies, gear, food and trade with other people. The build up your own defences and abilities (but just for your own character)make friends with other people or make enemies, also If your at open war with another person you could raid there area and try to steal theyre supplies (ammo, food, tools, and other such resources). I would say make playable maps of major world wide cities. (Think bout sniping zombies or players you hate from the Eifel tower)
Dont just have 1 story buildings have multiple story buildings for you to shore up with sand bags wood boards razor wire also the more space you have the more items/ppl you can have in it. I got TONS of ideas for a game like this but I cant find anything to do with them, Ive tried contacting Capcom with my idea but I just get the service department or placed on hold till I fall asleep ...zzzZZZ

Re: Fantasy Zombie Game, Part 1

This is almost exactly what I've been wishing for since the day I learned what RTSs and Zombies were. I dunno, there'd be so many different things you'd have to do, and as a result just as many things that could go wrong and the player ends up dying. Also, personally I would rather do the zombie killing rather than watch an army do it for me. I think they should make an action mmorpg zombie game, where you could switch from third(like Dead Rising) and first person views (like Rainbow Six Las Vegas, not a zombie game I know, that's besides the point). Everyone would start out in some remote part of a huge online city swarmed with zombies, and would have to fight their way to a large sheltered place of gathering survivors. Where they can get quests and items and weapons and crap like that. I also think that if you kill a lot of zombies in one area, that area should stay devoid of zombies(or at least have a significantly less amount of zombies) for an extended period of time. Those things, along with many other features I could think of but don't want to list, would make the ultimate zombie game.

Re: Fantasy Zombie Game, Part 1

This kind of game is exactly what we need.
